Girlfriend Games

I thought I post something. It has been getting quiet around here for some time but it’s mainly since I’m getting into a very exciting phase of Illucinated.
But I would talk about something else which is “women”. Now for a male geek game designer like me, having a girlfriend that is not so much into games [...]

Excit Post-Mortem Video

Remember how I made a presentation at Casual Connect Europe 2009? Remember how I was going to talk about Excit and do a Post-Mortem of it? Well, finally here is the audio together with my Slides:
Excit Flash Game Post-Mortem from Krystian Majewski on Vimeo.
(Also availible on YouTube but they said it had to be split into 2 [...]

Illucinated Maps

Haven’t written about Illucinated for some time now. However, I’ve been working hard on it and made some serious progress. This weekend, I should be finished with the most part of the programming. From then on, the only programming left would be bugfixing and adjusting the technology for online distribution. But what I’m going to [...]

Closing Thoughts: Mass Effect

Today I finished Mass Effect. I thought I was close to the end but I haven’t realized how close I was. I will write a Game Design Review on the disaster they call interface. Here are some other thoughts about it, fresh from my wetware:
It’s cheesy. It has all the clichés. You are the hero of [...]

Realistic Space Exploration

My recent… encounter with Mass Effect inspired me to sum up some thoughts I’ve been carrying around for some time now. As you might know, I spend some time digging into astronomy as a sort of a hobby. The reason (and the result) is that I’m very dissatisfied with the way space exploration is conveyed [...]

Ulysses

And now to something completely different. I just finished Ulysses. Finally! I got the book as a birthday present from my girlfriend in 2007. I immediately read the introduction but after a few pages of the actual book, I realized it wouldn’t be a book I could read en passant. So I put it away [...]

First Impressions: Burnout Paradise & Mass Effect

I’m currently cutting my blogging and commenting to a minimum to concentrate on my work so I apologize if I haven’t been too responsive in the last days. Nevertheless, I have briefly tried two new games and I would like to hold my first impressions to possibly pick them up later.
Burnout ParadiseWith the Ultimate Box out [...]

DOS System Font

From me to you with love: the DOS System Font

A faithful recreation of the DOS / IBM PC System Font. Monospaced with very short descenders and thick font weight for better readability on low fidelity CRT displays. Makes me want to optimize AUTOEXEC.BATs all over again.
Including original “More Latin” characters and custom made “Extended Latin A” characters [...]

Reinventing Dialogue

The task for this month’s Roundtable is very intriguing and quite challenging:
February’s BoRT invites you take a game design suggested by another blogger in last month’s Round Table and build upon it. You should ignore the literary source of the original design, but attempt to communicate the same themes and/or convey the same mood as [...]

Hawx

Now here is a surprise: I gave the Hawx demo a try and I felt compelled to write about it. It is a Tom Clancy game about modern air combat. Now, I could go off on a tangent now how I hate military and how I found myself surprised playing Call of Duty 4 – I guess [...]
